Advice on a gun

I am considering buying a gun to keep at the house. Dad has a couple but they are old and he keeps them locked up. I am looking at something new and not very expensive.
It doesnt have to be big and powerful, I just need something to keep in case of something terrible.

My price range is $100-$600. I cant afford a huge new gun but I dont want to go cheap and get a piece of junk.

Would I be better off with a shotgun like a Remington 870 or a handgun like a Glock. 40?

we use the 870's at work and if you aren't skilled that badboy is the answer (hard to miss with it:2thumbsup

Not to mention if your target sees you swinging that barrel at them,they will back down pdq knowing you aren't going to miss (a chance you take with the 40 if you aren't skilled with firearms).

I wont say im not skilled; I have shot guns for years. Ive never been a big hunter but my entire family is so I am very familiar with firearms. Ive shot everything from a .22 mag to a .357 mag to an AK. Ive shot the 870 before and the kick wasnt terrible.

but I am far from an expert or a gun collector. I know how to clean em and load clips but I couldnt build one.

Ill put it this way; not quite a novice but FAR from an expert

I got a .357 here at the house and also plan on getting some sort of shotgun within the next year.

I am fairly certain you mean magazine and not clip. Anyway for home defense the 870 with the rrigth load would be ideal. A home defense load would be one that isn't hot and contains a lot of ahot per shell, the object is more to stop and deter and not kill. You also don't want a miss going through a wall and killing or severally hurting someone in the next room. Having the same discussion on another forum right now. For personal protection, which would be to carry or keep in the car then you can't hardly beat the Glock or KelTec P-3AT in .380 I prefer the KelTec since it is 100% made in USA .

How many times has someone clobbered you in the middle of the night sleep walking?

870 is a easy home defense weapon. I have been thinking about a pistol here lately also. I haven't shot many pistols, but my aim does suck with them. Of course thats shooting at a can on a fence post.

Nah I meant clip. The clip goes into an internal magazine, is that not correct? Ive not shot many new guns at all, mostly older rifles that use clips. I know that magazines and clips are not the same thing.
I know most newer guns just use a magazine but like I said im not up to date, I shot mostly with my papaw and he used older rifles. His M1 still used a clip. Ive loaded magazines on glocks and such just a few times, i wouldnt be sure how to do it but I could load the clip on an older rifle like an M1.

what about Sigs? A friend has a P232 and loves it. He said he paid almost $600 but loves the gun. I believe he said its a .380 round but im not sure. Anyone have any experice with any sig sauer?

Gotcha on the clip, most people don't know the difference and call mags clips, irks the pee out of me.

Sig makes a really good gun but for pprice difference can't beat the Kel, new around$ 350.

Stripes if you want to shoot shoot some different ones to see what you like better I have a Walther .380, Ruger 9mm and S&W. 45. Although the Pheonix. 22 might be better suited for you. ;-)
